I like them. Epic has done a great job with their Gears of War ads. I was showing Angie last night and she liked them, too. I took that as a sign that they were a little more than an average gameplay trailer, especially since Gears is NOT her type of game. The first one, with Gary Jules remake of the Tears for Fears song, “Mad World”:
And then for Gears of War 2, they used DeVotchKa’s “How It Ends”:
Do you like these? Would you buy a game, or look INTO buying a game, after seeing an ad like these?

I’m not sure you’re giving me enough credit for versatility in appreciation. Who would think I would like BioShock as much as I did? It’s the scenery, the mood, and the story that makes a game for me. And as long as I don’t have to hit the “jump” button too often, I don’t mind playing them myself sometimes. Oh, and as long as there’s not some damn bird making ridiculous noises with each step, they can be cool to watch too… damn old school Kazooie…
I thought both of those were kinda…what? “Deliberate” is the only word I can come up with. I wasn’t inspired by the music so much as confused. Is this guy unhappy about his lot as a soldier? Was he coerced? I’m reasonably sure that the game is all about shooting people in the…behind, so why the somber attitude? Are they trying to fake the people into thinking that the game has a moral depth, or that the hero is more than just a guy who runs around shooting people in the…behind? Maybe they presuppose that the viewer KNOWS what the game is all about, so they’re giving it a different spin just for fun. For a non-insider, though, it doesn’t work…I never really wanted the games before, and I still don’t after watching the trailers. But, then, I’m the guy who wandered around the building humming “I’m a Lumberjack” all day.
